A well-designed protein shake can accomplish some pretty interesting things. Of course, you can get a heaping dose of your protein for the day with a minimal investment of time and energy.
But you can also sneak all sorts of nutrients into that shake, making it a complete meal – something generally lacking from protein shakes. Typically, these drinks contain little of anything except protein.
By using the all too under-appreciated pea protein, which naturally has a savory flavor, you can create a rich and nutritious shake. We'll also throw some fruit in there for some balancing sweetness, in addition to all sorts of micronutrients.
With all that going on, you won't even notice the protein- and fiber-rich spinach hidden in the shake. A touch of cinnamon thrown in at the end will help to deepen the flavor and normalize your blood sugar so that you have a steady supply of energy over the next few hours.
- 2 cups chopped fresh greens such as spinach, thick stems removed
- 1 mango, cut into chunks (about 2 cups if using frozen)
- 1 cup milk (or liquid of choice)
- 1 banana
- 1 scoop pea protein powder
- Ice (as needed)
- Cinnamon (to taste)
Mix all the ingredients in a blender until thoroughly combined, using ice to control the texture and thickness.
If you use frozen fruit, you will probably need considerably less ice. Top it off with the cinnamon.
